What is a Binocular Vision Problem? 

A Binocular Vision Problem occurs when the eyes do not coordinate and track properly. This affects how the brain combines the input from each eye into a single, clear, and comfortable image. Binocular vision problems can interfere with depth perception, eye coordination, focus, and overall development.

Binocular vision problems can affect more than academics. Below is list of common symptoms related to a binocular vision problem. If you or your child experiences any of the following symptoms, they may have an undiagnosed binocular vision problem and we recommend scheduling an evaluation today. 

Common Symptoms of a Binocular Vision Problem 

Eye Fatigue & Discomfort

  • Eyes feel tired, sore, or strained after reading or using screens

  • Comes home very fatigued or with headaches consistently 

  • Headaches after near work like reading

  • Burning, itchy, or watery eyes

  • Excessive blinking 

Reading & Learning Difficulties

  • Skips or re-reads lines when reading

  • Loses place easily or uses a finger to keep place

  • Avoids reading or becomes frustrated quickly

  • Poor reading comprehension despite good decoding skills

Vision Clarity & Alignment

  • Words blur or move on the page

  • Sees double at any distance

  • Closes or covers one eye while reading or focusing

  • One eye turns in or out, especially when tired

Concentration & Attention

  • Short attention span during near tasks

  • Easily distracted while doing schoolwork

  • Fidgety or restless during reading

  • Diagnosed with ADHD 

Spatial Deficits 

  • Poor depth perception (difficulty catching balls, parking, judging steps)

  • Motion sickness, dizziness, or nausea when reading or in vehicles

  • Frequently trips or bumps into things

Prevalence of a Binocular Vision Problem

- Studies show that more than 20% of school-aged children have undiagnosed binocular vision issues such as convergence insufficiency, accommodative dysfunction, or oculomotor dysfunction.


- These conditions often go undetected in standard vision screenings and routine eye exams, which typically assess distance clarity (20/20 acuity) but not visual efficiency or processing.
